Birding and Natural History Camp
Camping in the High Andes
The Yeso Valley, two nights in the High Andes.
La Campana National Park. One night in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Endemics and Owls where Darwin found them.
This trips can combined with any other of our birding trips in Chile.
The Yeso Valley offers, just two hours from Santiago, one of the most impressive landscapes of the Andes of central Chile.
Surrounded by colorful mountains, glaciers and starry skies, it is the ideal place to observe some of the species of birds that live in high places. Andean Condor, Diademed Sandpiper- Plover, Grey-breasted SeedSnipe, White-sided Hillstar, Mountain Parakeet and several species of colorful finches can all be found in the area.
As we move up the Yeso valley we stop to look for some of the endemic species of Chile .. Moustached Turca, Crag Chilia and Dusky- tailed Canastero. We also hope to find other interesting birds like Torrent Duck, Mountain Caracara and many others.
We move steadily on until we reach our base camp located at 9000 ft (2800 m). When you get there the tents are ready with a comfortable place to sleep, an excellent dinner and then you can rest in the deep silence of the mountain.
The next morning you wake up early to have breakfast, surrounded by giant and colorful mountains which surpass 13,000 ft (4,000 m), near the border with Argentina.
We drive to different locations and altitudes for short walks that allow us to look for interesting high altitude species such as Andean Goose, Creamy-rumped Miner, Scale-throated Earthcreeper, Cordilleran Canastero. Four species of Tyranids can be found in the area: Cinereous, Black-fronted and Ochre-naped Ground-Tyrants and Black-belled Shrike-Tyrant.
At the end of the day, we return to our base camp to enjoy our second dinner in the mountains.
The next day we return to the capital after breakfast.
The British naturalist Charles Darwin in 1834, while traveling around Central Chile, discover a unique place in the world ..La Campana.
In the park, declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, you can find a rich variety of native flora, of which the highlight is the Chilean palm (Jubaea chilensis) and the Mediterranean scrub and forest.
This diversity of environments, which makes La Campana National Park, is the ideal place to look, for some bird species endemic to Chile, including: Moustached Turca, White-throated Tapaculo, Chilean Tinamou and Dusky- tailed Canastero.
On its scrub covered slopes, we can see some species of raptors such as Black- chested Buzzard Eagle, Harris's Hawk and American Kestrel.
In the evening and after dinner at our base camp, we will go in search of owls that live in the area, some of which are: Barn Owl and Austral Pygmy Owl. It is also possible to see one of the rarest owls in Chile: the Rufous- legged Owl.
The following early morning and after breakfast, we will walk among the forested areas looking for some specialist birds in these environments such as White-throated Treerunner, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Chilean Flicker and Striped Woodpecker.
In the afternoon we return to Santiago refreshed by a wonderful experience of unspoilt nature.
