ABOUT BIRDING IN CHILE
Chile is one of the most beautiful countries in the world with a physical geography that is surprisingly difficult to describe. A blend of New Zealand´s south Island and California's driest desert, with some 6500 kilometers of coastline but never be more than 200 kilometres wide!
As for the birds get ready to find penguins, albatrosses, pelicans, firecrowns, rayaditos, huet-huets, tapaculos, wiretails, earthcreepers, miners, shrike-tyrants and other unusual sounding species. The A list stars of the show are the Wandering Albatross and the Andean Condor with, respectively, the longest wing span and the greatest wing area of any bird in the world. Then look at the Diademed Sandpiper Plover and the Many Coloured Rush Tyrant, two of the smallest but most glorious of Chile´s list and then back up the scale to the 3 different species of Flamingo or the Burrowing Parrot, a Macaw in size and voice and colour but that can be found in giant flocks. There are a good number of genuine endemics - Moustached Turca, Crag Chilia, Slender-billed Parakeet, Chilean Seaside Cinclodes, Dusky-tailed Canastero etc., and more than 60 birds that can only be found in the southern cone of South America and which are possible to find here.
For those with a more general interest in nature there is a wonderful range of endemic plants and some unusual insect and mammal life and in terms of human achievement the visit to Chile can extend to enjoying the art, music and architecture that form part of the attraction of this modern and developed country.
Chile is a stable and modern democracy with excellent transport infrastructure. Despite the country´s strange shape travel is easy with particularly well developed internal air travel infrastructure served by 3 carriers which keeps prices reasonable. On the ground the road network is good with generally low traffic densities and for the places where the roads don´t go there are good boat services which offer the chance to slow the pace and enjoy some amazing scenery.
Chile produces excellent wines, fruits, vegetables and seafood and there is a thriving dairy and sheepfarming sector and these natural delights are supported by a vibrant restaurant culture and a national cuisine that has excellent specialities for vegetarians and carnivores alike. This is a wonderful country to enjoy and explore! We would be delighted to welcome you and make the experience one to treasure.
