Birding in Puerto-Montt and Chiloé Island

Birding in Puerto-Montt and Chiloé Island

The surroundings of Puerto-Montt and Chiloé Island offer excellent birding with some of the most incredible landscapes of Chile!

In the beautiful Nothofagus forest, we will look for some of the most spectacular tapaculos, the Chucao Tapaculo and the Black-throated Huet-huet. Looking for these birds, we should also find Des Mur's Wiretail, White-throated Treerunner, the abundant Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Ochre-flanked Tapaculo, Green-backed Firecrown, Austral Pygmy-owl, and with a little bit of luck, Magellanic Woodpecker and Patagonian Tyrant.

In the bays here and on the crossing from the mainland to the island of Chiloé there is the chance to find the newly discovered Pincoya Storm-Petrel..a must for pelagic fans !

On the north of Chiloé Island, you will visit a penguin colony where two species are breeding together: Humboldt and Magellanic. At the same place, you will find Kelp Goose, Flightless Steamer-duck, Blackish Oystercatcher, 4 species of Cormorant and probably a Marine Otter swimming around.

The same area holds 30% of the world population of Hudsonian Godwit during their non-breeding season. These birds realise a tremendous migration over the Pacific, doing a non-stop flight from Alaska to Chiloé, where they spend the boreal winter. On the coastal mudflats where the godwits are wintering, we should also find groups of Black-necked Swans, the lovely Snowy-crowned Tern, some Black Skimmer (migrating from Amazonia!), and perhaps a few Chilean Flamingoes.

In the open fields we should find numerous groups of Black-faced Ibis, while our main target will be the Slender-billed Parakeet, a Chilean endemic usually easy to find in the north of Chiloé Island.

Many cruise ship passengers spend a single day here off their ships but it´s worth devoting 3-4 days to visit the many parks, forests and lakes that make up this enchanting part of Chile.
