Birding in Temuco

Birding in Temuco

Close to Temuco, the Cerro Nielol protects one of the last native forests in the central depression of southern Chile. This Natural Monument is the refuge of many species typical of the Chilean temperate forests. Here we have good chances to find several species of tapaculo; Chucao, Ochre-flanked and Magellanic and the spectacular Black-throated Huet-huet.

We will also have a good chance of finding a breeding pair of Rufous tailed Hawk, rare and difficult to see in most of its range. More common species here include Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Des Mur's Wiretail, White-throated Treerunner, Green-backed Firecrown, and the endemic Slender-billed Parakeet. At dusk we will look for the vocal Rufous-legged Owl.

In the grasslands around Temuco, we will look for Hellmayr's and Correndera Pipit, the endemic Chilean Tinamou, Spectacled Tyrant, Misto Yellow-finch, Saffron Finch, Cinereous Harrier and others. An excursion to the Conguillio NP can also be organized from Temuco. You will find here some of the most amazing sceneriy in Chile: impressive Araucaria forests, wonderful lakes and snow covered volcano.

The birding is excellent here, and you have good chance to find here the recently split Patagonian-forest Earthcreeper, the stunning Spectacled Duck, a few Flying Steamer Duck, Andean Condor, Austral Pygmy-Owl, and most of the typical species found in Nothofagus forests.
